Charles looking to kick on after return to action

Liam Ryder10 Sep - 20:30

Fresh from making just a second start of the 2025/26 campaign, Jake Charles expressed his delight at a goalscoring return.

The experienced Northern Premier League forward netted a stunning equaliser in Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Stockton Town at the Towbar Express Stadium, scoring five minutes ahead of half-time.

"It felt good to get a solid hour in," Charles said following the conclusion of the Seasiders' midweek outing.

"I felt good, I felt strong, and I'm getting that fitness back. It's a bit stop-start after a lengthy injury and you get niggles here and there.

"Hopefully I can build on things now and get back playing regularly."

The finish which resulted in Whitby's equaliser against the Anchors was one of confidence, fitting for the way Charles has approached his return to regular action.

And there was a lot of thought that went into the strike given the manner of the way in which the ball fell on to the vicious left boot of the forward.

"The ball dropped to me and the defender actually kicked me in the stomach, winding me a bit," Charles explained.

"I was half thinking do I go down? But it fell nicely in the end and I took it early to score."

Town will expect a tough encounter in their next outing - an Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying tie at Hyde United - particularly with a 5-2 defeat at the same venue just three weeks ago still somewhat fresh in the memory.

Hyde enter the match managerless following the resignation of Nick Spooner, and come into the clash on the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Leek Town.

"Obviously it's a cup game but anyone can beat anyone in our league as we know," Charles admitted. "We want to go there and get a bit of revenge.

"We want to build on Tuesday night's performance and hopefully get ourselves into the draw for the next round."
