David Coleby - 231 Appearances for Whitby Town

Liam Ryder6 May - 12:30

Whitby Town pay tribute to former goalkeeper David Coleby, who made an outstanding 231 appearances for the club.

These appearances came across an eventful and distinguished career between 1974 and 1985, and in a memorable Northern League Cup Final farewell.

David arrived at the Turnbull Ground in August 1974 as a young goalkeeper with strong pedigree, having begun his career as an apprentice at Chesterfield and Burnley before returning to his native North East. Signed from Nunthorpe Athletic, he initially served as understudy to former Middlesbrough keeper Maurice Short, making his debut in a 2-0 victory over West Auckland Town and keeping his place for the following matches, including a clean sheet away at South Bank.

From those early days, David’s talent and composure quickly became evident. After gaining further experience in the 1975/76 season, he stepped in regularly when required, before establishing himself as first-choice goalkeeper during the 1976/77 campaign. That season brought both silverware and setbacks, as he played a key role in Whitby’s Rothmans Knockout Cup triumph over Blyth Spartans, while also suffering an injury that halted a strong run of form.

Injury would become an unfortunate theme of David’s career, as another serious setback in 1977 kept him out of the game for three seasons. However, his determination saw a remarkable return in 1980 under manager Tony Lee, re-joining as understudy before reclaiming the gloves with a clean sheet against Whitley Bay.

What followed was a remarkable second spell at the club. David re-established himself as Whitby’s number one and was ever-present during some of the club’s most competitive Northern League seasons. In 1981/82 and 1982/83, he played a central role as Whitby twice finished runners-up in the league, missing out on the title by narrow margins to Blyth Spartans. During this period, he also reached the milestone of 100 appearances and helped secure the North Riding Senior Cup, further underlining his importance to the side.

The 1983/84 season was particularly memorable. David featured in Whitby’s historic FA Cup run to the second round for the first time in the club’s history, including the famous comeback victory over Halifax Town and a narrow defeat to Wigan Athletic. He also helped the side reach the FA Trophy quarter-finals and produced standout performances in cup competitions, including saving two penalties in a League Cup tie against Bishop Auckland. Later that season, he brought up his 150th appearance for the club.

Despite injury setbacks at the start of the 1984/85 campaign, David once again returned to play a vital role, reaching his 200th appearance during the season. He also featured in Whitby’s FA Cup tie against Chesterfield and ended the year in fitting fashion, making his final appearance in a Northern League Cup Final victory over North Shields in May 1985 - lifting the trophy for a fifth time in a fitting conclusion to his Whitby career.

After leaving Whitby Town, David went on to join Scarborough FC, where he continued his career in the Gola League, before later linking up with former Whitby manager Tony Lee again at Billingham Synthonia, where he added further success with a Northern League Second Division title.

David Coleby’s legacy at Whitby Town is defined by resilience, consistency, and commitment through nearly a decade of service, overcoming serious injury to return stronger and play a leading role in one of the club’s most competitive eras. His 231 appearances remain a testament to his dedication and importance to the Seasiders during a memorable period in the club’s history.

Our thoughts are with David’s family and friends at this sad time, and we extend our deepest condolences to all who knew him.
