Saturday's live screening of England's FIFA World Cup clash with Panama marked more than just another memorable evening of international football at the Towbar Express Stadium.
The occasion also served as the final event hosted by Turnbull's Bar as an independent entity, bringing to a close a chapter that has played an important role in the social life of Whitby Town Football Club and the wider community.
From 1 July 2026, the venue will begin a new era under the direct management of Whitby Town Football Club, following the club's announcement earlier this year that it would take over the operation of the bar.
The move is designed to allow the club to maximise the opportunities presented by the venue while continuing to enhance the matchday and non-matchday experience for supporters and visitors alike.
Saturday's England versus Panama broadcast provided a fitting final occasion, with supporters gathering to enjoy the World Cup atmosphere in familiar surroundings before the transition takes effect.
Since opening under its current management structure in 2018, Turnbull's Bar has become a valued meeting place for football supporters, local residents and community groups. Whether hosting post-match gatherings, fundraising events, celebrations or major sporting occasions, the venue has established itself as a key part of the Whitby Town experience.
The club would once again like to thank Stephen Shields, Beverley Rutherford, Brogan Shields and Emma Hugill for their dedication, professionalism and commitment throughout the past eight years. Their efforts have helped create a welcoming venue that has become an integral part of the experience of visiting Whitby Town Football Club.
While one chapter comes to an end, another begins immediately. Supporters can look forward to seeing Turnbull's Bar continue to operate and grow as a vibrant hub for both the football club and the wider Whitby community, with Whitby Town committed to building on the strong foundations established by the outgoing team.
The transition also comes at an important time for the club as Whitby Town prepares to launch its new membership model for the 2026/27 season.
With Turnbull's Bar now operating under club management, members will enjoy a range of exclusive benefits designed to strengthen the connection between supporters and their football club.
Membership will provide access to member-only discounts throughout the club, including offers within Turnbull's Bar, alongside voting rights and a greater opportunity for supporters to play an active role in the club's future. Click here for more information on membership.
As Whitby Town enters its second century, bringing Turnbull's Bar back under the club's direct control represents another step towards creating a stronger, more sustainable community-focused football club, with members and supporters at the heart of its future development.
Everyone connected with Whitby Town would once again like to place on record their sincere thanks to all those who have contributed to Turnbull's Bar's success over the years and look forward to welcoming supporters through the doors as the venue enters its next exciting phase.
