The defender departed the Towbar Express Stadium after two seasons with the Seasiders, having made a significant contribution both on and off the pitch during his time at the club.
Following the announcement of his departure earlier this summer after rejecting the club's offer of a new contract, Whitby Town and Spennymoor Town have now reached an agreement for the permanent transfer of the 22-year-old.
Whelan arrived at Whitby ahead of the 2024/25 campaign following his departure from Middlesbrough and quickly established himself as a regular in the side. Across two seasons, he developed into a key member of the squad, earning the respect of teammates, staff and supporters alike through his commitment, professionalism and consistent performances.
While naturally disappointed to lose a player of Frankie's quality, the club is pleased to have secured a transfer fee which can be reinvested as preparations continue for the 2026/27 season.
Everyone at Whitby Town would like to place on record their thanks to Frankie for his efforts in a blue shirt and for the dedication he has shown throughout his time at the club.
We wish him every success for the future and look forward to following the next chapter of his career.
