Recently appointed First Team Coach, Nathan Haslam talks about his move to Whitby Town

Nathan Haslam was unveiled as Whitby Town's new First Team Coach on Monday afternoon ahead of the 2020/21 season.

This will see the former Whitley Bay manager join up with Chris Hardy and Lee Bullock in an ambitious management team at the Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull Ground.

Haslam spoke about how he feels to have made the move to the Seasiders and what he is looking for when the new season comes around.

Whitby Town is a big club and the club is in an area that I'm originally from in North Yorkshire. The club is similar to to Whitley Bay in terms of how big it is in non-league football but obviously Whitby is higher up the pyramid. It presents another challenge for me but I've known Chris and Lee for a long time from working in football and we've come up against each other in the past. The move came about at the right time and it's a good fit for me.

As an outsider I knew that Whitby Town are in a really competitive league but they're in a hard area to attract players. Having spoke with Chris and Lee, and other contacts I've got being an ex-football agent it's a case of having three brains together all with different ideas and hopefully we'll all bounce off each other and help to improve the team in a lot of areas. The concept is mouth watering because we've got no egos and we're three lads who know each other, and we're football people. Chris has been in management for a number of years and myself and Bully have played for a while so it's a case of three football heads discussing how we can move the club forwards.

There's some cracking teams in the league and that will lead to bumper crowds which is what players all aspire to play in as it gives them a chance to express themselves and show people what they're all about. By rights Whitby Town should be nowhere near some of the big boys but I've got a lot of optimism going forwards that we can compete and make a real good go of things next season.

There are a few players already at the club that I know such as Blandy who I've known for a number of years as I used to look after him as a player. I helped Dan Rowe move to Whitby when he left Frickley and he's been a revelation and a very good player for Whitby. I know Dicko the goalkeeping coach and Bradley Mills as well. From afar I probably know most of the players and I'm looking forward to getting to know the players that I don't know. I believe that we've got to strengthen up and improve as we look to move forwards.

Looking ahead to what we're after I'm pretty firm in believing that you can never count your chickens in football because it's got a knack of slapping you across the face when you get these high expectations. The things that we can guarantee as a management team are that we will be one of the most organised teams in the league and we will be one of the most hard-working teams in the league. We'll be prepared in terms of opposition analysis and the way we play will be very structured but we'll look to bring some news things to the table in terms of set-pieces so we'll be very well equipped to do well but it's about getting the blend and getting the right personnel into the club as we're looking for people to run through brick walls for each other and do the hard part of the game. We might need a little bit of luck along the way. I've always looked at Whitby as being a lower end of the table to mid-table team in this league but they had a cracking season last time around, especially with the injuries that they had. With a little tweak here and a little tweak there I think we can do really well but there are certain areas that need to work for us to do that. It's up to me, Chris and Lee to do that through pre-season to ensure that we start well.
