Striker, Steve French signed for the Seasiders from Scarborough in September 1987. He left to join South Bank in October 1988, but returned 11 months later before finally departing in September 1991 to join Harrogate Town. He made 139 appearances, scoring 71 goals.
He was Whitby Town Supporters' player of the year in every season he was at the club and was the Northern League's top scorer in the 1989/90 with 26 goals, the same tally as Paul Pitman, but Frenchy took the award as he'd played fewer games.
My first memory of Whitby Town FC was dropping the Colby brothers off on the Scarborough FC coach and it was an FA Cup First Round match - the ground, the lights and the atmosphere!
Joining Whitby came about with the help of a great friend of mine, John Webster, who was a business associate of then manager, Peter Creamer. John asked Peter to come and watch me up at Whitby Rugby Club, playing for Tennyson United v Fishburn Park before a home game. I was asked to turn up for a midweek match against Spennymoor and I started the game - my debut being on 9th September 1987.
From my first game to my last I enjoyed every moment, especially with the staff and fans. I made a lot of friends at Whitby Town FC and I am still in contact with some of them to this day. My best friend in the squad was Paul Quantrill, and he is still in touch with me regularly.
Memories - wow too many - but coming back after the pre-season in 1989/90 when Eddie Gray was appointed and then scoring on my debut and going on to be the Northern League's top scorer was brilliant. It was the best season of my life.
There are a hell of a lot of memorable games but David Mills' Testimonial against West Brom was great where I beat Andy Gray for a header before getting slapped on the head by him. Then Afterwards I started dissing Ron Atkinson in the clubhouse in front of a full house which was hilarious.
The biggest honours from Whitby Town FC would have to be being the club's player of the year three times, and being the top goal scorer two times. The friends and memories from my time at Whitby are things that I will never forget.
