Jake Charles: "We should have done more with our possession"

Liam Ryder28 Dec 2025 - 11:30

Jake Charles offered an honest assessment of Whitby Town's Boxing Day defeat and reflected on the failure to make their second-half dominance count.

Experienced Northern Premier League striker Charles was heavily involved on a disappointing afternoon and hit the forced a number of good saves from Morpeth gloveman Daniel Langley, including in the second half was Gary Liddle's men pushed for an equaliser after going behind for a second time to Joel Holvey's neat 37th-minute strike.

Whitby saw other opportunities go begging, and had strong appeals for a penalty when Frankie Whelan was grappledinside his area. However, despite having the greater share of possession, they were only able to sporadically test Langley.

And Charles admitted that was ultimately what cost the Blues on the afternoon. Here are some of his post-match thoughts:

ON THE MANNER OF THE DEFEAT...

"The Morpeth game was disappointing because in the first half we started well and were on top for large spells of the game. We just struggled with the end cross, shot, or pass to finish off our entries into the final third.

"It was disappointing to concede the goals that we did also."

ON TOWN'S SECOND-HALF SHOWING...

"In the second half, we seemed to stop what we was doing in the first half in terms of moving the ball through the thirds and getting in behind on occasions which we didn’t seem to do at all in the second half.

"We still had the majority of the possession and should’ve done more with it."

ON THE SEASIDERS' HOME STRUGGLES...

"I think we’ve shown we can pick up points at home but a lot of those have come against teams we aren’t expected to get anything from.

"We need to try to make the Towbar Express Stadium a tough place to come to for every team and we will keep trying to do this."

ON THE WAY FORWARD...

"We will improve in form. We believe this as a squad. We need to be more consistent throughout 90 minutes first of all, and as a team be more ruthless in both boxes.

"We’ve shown we can pick up results against the so called better teams in the league so it’s about making the performance more consistent and the results will follow."
