Match Preview: Workington vs Whitby Town

Lewis Forbister

Whitby Town travel to Cumbria on Tuesday night to face Workington at the Fibrus Community Stadium, marking their first away league fixture in a month.

The Seasiders head into the encounter unbeaten in their last two league matches on the road, having secured victories against Quorn and Hyde United in August and September respectively.

Workington currently occupy a play-off position in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division and have suffered just one defeat in their last eight matches. However, their most recent outing ended in a 3-0 away loss to Quorn, providing a reminder of the challenges facing the Reds as they look to get back to winning ways.

At home, Workington have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, recording three wins, two draws and one defeat from their six matches at their own ground. That return of 11 points from a possible 18 highlights the task facing Whitby as they look to secure a positive result on the road.

Tuesday's fixture also comes during a significant period of transition for Workington. Having played at the historic Borough Park for 89 years, from 1937 until 2026, the club brought its long association with the ground to an end following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign. For the 2026-27 season, the Reds have relocated to neighbouring rugby ground Derwent Park, where they will play their home fixtures until Borough Park is demolished and the planned Cumberland Sports Village development is completed. The new facility will then become the club's permanent home.

Recent meetings between the two sides suggest there is little to separate them. Across the last six encounters, Workington hold a narrow advantage with two victories, while Whitby claimed a win in the corresponding fixture's recent history in August 2025. The remaining three meetings have ended in draws, setting the stage for another potentially close contest.

For Whitby, Tuesday night marks Graeme Lee's second match in charge of the Seasiders. His tenure began with a disciplined 0-0 draw at home to Bamber Bridge, providing a solid foundation on which to build. Lee will now be hoping his side can carry that defensive resilience into their trip to Cumbria and turn it into a positive result as the new era at the Towbar Express Stadium continues.
