New signing James Martin gives his first interview as a Whitby Town player

Whitby Town announced the signing of James Martin last Saturday afternoon after the left-sided player had completed his move from Whitley Bay.

Predominantly a left-back, Martin has played north of the border with Scottish Championship side Queen of the South and also with Hartlepool United when they were in the Football League.

Now with the Seasiders, Martin discusses what brought him to the club and what he hopes to achieve next season.

I was attracted to Whitby Town going off what I'd heard about the club and the level that they play at. Nathan Haslam recently moved there from Whitley Bay and he spoke highly of Chris and Lee. I've also spoken with the gaffer and he spoke about the ambition that the club have and what people involved with the club want to do going forwards. These were all big factors in attracting me to Whitby Town.

Speaking to the gaffer it became clear what he wants to achieve going forwards. On a personal level it's just about getting my feet in, getting a good start to the season and getting three points on a Saturday. I hope to have an impact in the team that benefits the side.

I'm an attacking full-back who likes to get forwards and make things happen. I also like to defend and keep clean sheets at the same time. I would just say that I like to do my best for the side.

I know a few players at the club already. I played with Brad Fewster for a bit at Hartlepool and I also know Mackenzie Heaney who's also just signed. I've played against a few players as well but it's just the two that I've played with. It's hard at the moment because I haven't met any of the lads yet so I still don't know the full squad and who's there but I can't wait to meet them all and see who's there.

The current situation isn't ideal. The ideal situation would have been to have signed, get down to the ground for a face-to-face chat with the gaffer, meet the lads and get a couple of training sessions in. Everything's been done over the phone because we can't meet up. It's all been a bit frustrating because I don't know when I can start training. We don't know when the season is going to start but I've been impressed with the way in which the deal has been handled and it shows how professionally the club is run.
