Former Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Bradford City and Hartlepool United defender Matthew Bates came in alongside Jonathan Franks as Assistant Manager.

As a player, the Stockton-born centre-back also had loan spells at Darlington, Ipswich Town and Norwich City before featuring for the aforementioned EFL clubs following his departure from the Riverside Stadium where he made 104 appearances for Boro.

Initially appointed as caretaker manager in 2017 whilst still a player at Hartlepool, Bates took over as first-team manager for a brief spell in 2018, and after a break from the game, the UEFA B Licence coach returned as Nathan Haslam's Assistant in September 2022.
