Bishop Auckland 0-3 Whitby Town

Liam Ryder16 Jul 2022 - 20:27

A first-half goal from Aaron Haswell, and second-half strikes from Bradley Fewster eased Whitby Town to a 3-0 friendly win over Bishop Auckland on Saturday afternoon.

Lee Bullock and Nathan Haslam handed minutes to almost the entire squad which had travelled to Heritage Park, with summer signing Kevy Tarangadzo wearing a Whitby shirt for the first time.

Well taken efforts from Haswell and Fewster sealed the victory for Whitby in County Durham, leaving Bullock and Haslam's men with two wins from two warm-up fixtures so far ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Middlesbrough.

Predictably, Town had the better of the early exchanges, with one of the trialists calling Nick Liversedge into action with three minutes played, however the effort was tame.

Bishop Auckland, managed by former Whitby boss Chris Hardy, did grow into the game however without ever seriously threatening Shane Bland thanks to the help of Tarangadzo and Jonathan Burn who both cut out dangerous low balls into the area.

With 21 minutes on the clock, Whitby got themselves ahead. The opener came from Haswell, who tapped into an empty net after some great work from Marcus Giles on the left wing saw Liversedge parry into the path of the former Ossett United man.

The goal really brought Whitby to life and they continued to keep Liversedge busy. Haswell fired over the crossbar, a trialist forced the him to tip the ball over the crossbar, before Giles made him parry an effort around the post all within a three-minute spell.

Jake Hackett, meanwhile, had a decent opportunity to call the home side's keeper into action again but he could only fire his long-range free-kick over the bar.

Bullock and Haslam shuffled the pack at half-time, with Jonathan Franks, Lewis Hawkins and Luke Hogg among the players to be introduced.

A substitute trialist had his first sight of goal not long after the restart, trying to bend an effort towards the bottom corner, but on his week foot the strike went well wide. The same trialist was involved five minutes later when he received the ball after some neat play around the edge of the box, but with Liversedge beaten the ball rolled just wide of the post.

Just two minutes later, one of the half-time replacements, Fewster, gave Town some breathing space with a fine finish. Harry Green had missed a penalty, however Fewster reacted quickly to fire in the rebound from a tight angle.

And heading into the final 20 minutes, Bullock and Haslam's charges added further gloss to the scoreline. Their third of the afternoon as also scored by Fewster. Hawkins' through ball split the defence, enabling Fewster to round the keeper and calmly slot the ball home into the unguarded net to round off an encouraging day for the Seasiders.
