The hosts made a bright start and almost found an early breakthrough inside the opening minute. Lucas Reed was quick to test the Pickering defence, cutting inside before seeing his effort take a deflection and drift narrowly wide of the target.

Whitby’s positive opening was rewarded after 14 minutes when Stan Hewitt capitalised on a defensive error. A loose pass at the back following a high press presented the forward with an opportunity, and he made no mistake, calmly slotting beyond Luke Jackson to give the Seasiders the lead.

The hosts continued to threaten and nearly doubled their advantage midway through the half. Leon Gibson-Booth delivered an excellent ball into the penalty area, finding the run of Callum Hickman, but the attacker could only guide his header over the crossbar from a promising position.

Despite Whitby’s encouraging play, Pickering found a route back into the contest on 32 minutes. A shot was spilled by Whitby’s trialist goalkeeper, allowing Emmanuel Martin to react quickest and convert the rebound to level the scores.

The equaliser sparked a lively spell for both sides. Hewitt remained at the heart of Whitby’s attacking play and, five minutes after Pickering’s goal, he produced a dangerous delivery across the face of goal that somehow evaded both Stuart Rose and Hickman as the visitors survived another scare.

At the other end, Whitby’s trialist goalkeeper responded positively to the earlier setback. He produced an important stop in the 39th minute, standing firm and making a strong save with his body to deny Pickering from close range.

Whitby finished the first half on the front foot. Reed came close to restoring the lead three minutes before the break, curling a well-struck effort towards goal only for a slight touch to divert the ball behind for a corner.

The decisive moment arrived five minutes into the second half. Whitby were awarded a free-kick in a wide position, and the trialist wearing the number seven shirt delivered a low, driven ball into a crowded penalty area. The delivery evaded everyone, skidded through a sea of bodies and found its way into the bottom corner to restore Whitby’s advantage.

The Seasiders looked increasingly comfortable after regaining the lead, although Pickering remained a threat on the counter-attack. Just after the hour mark, Whitby’s trialist goalkeeper produced arguably his best moment of the afternoon, staying alert to save impressively in a one-on-one situation and preserve his side’s lead.

Further chances followed for the hosts. Marley Grant came close to extending the advantage in the 71st minute when his low strike took a slight deflection and trickled narrowly wide of the post.

As the game moved into its closing stages, Whitby managed proceedings effectively and limited Pickering’s opportunities. The final chance of note arrived four minutes from time when Jack Kilpatrick struck goalwards, but Jackson gathered comfortably.

It proved to be a productive afternoon for Whitby Town, who showed encouraging attacking intent and resilience to regain control after being pegged back. With valuable minutes in the legs and a victory secured, the Seasiders can take plenty of positives from their first home outing of pre-season.
