The Seasiders looked firmly in control at the interval after an impressive opening 45 minutes that saw them establish a two-goal advantage, but a remarkable response from the visitors after the break turned the tie on its head.

Whitby made a bright start and were rewarded with the opening goal inside seven minutes. After sustained pressure inside the Ashton penalty area, the hosts kept the ball alive and eventually worked it into the path of Ben Turner, who showed great composure to slot home and give Lee Bullock's side an early lead.

The visitors attempted to respond as Jack Norton was called into action to preserve Whitby’s advantage, producing an excellent save to deny Harry Flowers’ first-time effort. Alex Byrne then almost equalised when his dangerous delivery struck the crossbar.

At the other end, Whitby continued to threat and added a second midway through the first half. Stuart Rose was on hand to finish by heading home an exquisite Joey Phuthi cross and send the Seasiders into a commanding position, capping off an encouraging spell of football from the hosts.

Justin Johnson came close to halving the lead further when he found space inside the area, only to head wide, meaning Whitby went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

Ashton emerged for the second half determined to force their way back into the contest. Although Kurt Willoughby missed a good opportunity shortly after the restart, the warning signs were beginning to appear for the Seasiders.

The turning point arrived just after the hour mark. James Hardy reduced the deficit on 61 minutes before striking again only two minutes later to level matters at 2-2. A contest that had looked comfortable for Whitby was suddenly transformed.

The Seasiders attempted to steady themselves, introducing fresh legs from the bench, while Willoughby squandered another chance when he headed wide from close range. Tempers briefly flared with Leon Gibson-Booth and Hardy both shown yellow cards following an off-the-ball incident.

However, Ashton’s momentum continued and Hardy completed a devastating hat-trick on 75 minutes to complete the comeback and hand the visitors the lead for the first time.

Whitby pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Ashton remained clinical whilst capitalising on slack Town defending. Hardy struck again four minutes later to make it 4-2 and leave the Seasiders with a mountain to climb.

Whitby were unable to find a route back into the tie and, deep into stoppage time, Darius Osei added a fifth goal to complete the scoring and seal Ashton United’s progression to Second Round Qualifying.

For long periods of the first half, Whitby looked capable of advancing comfortably, but Ashton’s ruthless second-half display proved decisive. The visitors scored five unanswered goals after the break to overturn a two-goal deficit and knock the Seasiders out of the Emirates FA Cup.

Whitby must now quickly regroup and turn their attention back to league matters when they travel to Hyde United next Saturday following a frustrating afternoon that saw a promising position slip away.
