Warrington Rylands 0-1 Whitby Town

Liam Ryder18 Aug 2024 - 07:59

Whitby Town were back in action at the Hive Arena after a 2-0 victory against Matlock Town in midweek, writes Will Berwick.

A trip to Warrington Rylands was on the agenda for Nathan Haslam’s men who were looking to build upon the midweek success.

Haslam named just the one change to the starting eleven as Aaron Haswell came into the side replacing Campbell Darcy. New signing Alex Hutchinson was included in the match day squad as the Town boss looks to bolster his attacking options.

Whitby started the game rather slowly and struggled to keep the ball for prolonged periods in the opening exchanges of the match in Cheshire.

Rylands, meanwhile, created some dangerous chances as Dylan Dwyers broke free down the left-hand side before firing a cross in that caused a goal mouth scramble before the ball was eventually retrieved by Shane Bland.

Unfortunately, Whitby were forced into an early change as summer arrival Gary Liddle had to leave the game due to injury. The Seasiders will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Liddle as he has been an integral part of the squad since arriving at the club. Frankie Whelan came on for the injured Liddle.

Shane Bland would be doing his best at winding up the home crowd as he managed to smash a clearance over the houses right next to the stadium.

In terms of Whitby going forward it was sluggish; Jake Charles had an effort denied just before the interval but that was it for the Blues in an attacking sense the first half.

Proceedings got underway for the second half as Joe Gibson replaced Priestley Griffiths after he looked to have picked up a slight knock.

Gibson’s impact would be evident as Whitby picked up the tempo immediately after of the interval creating chances that would test the 'keeper, Luke Pilling, for the home side.

However, Rylands also continued to create chances of their own with Liam Morris having an effort from distance easily saved by Bland.

Town turned to the bench, for tactical reasons this time, as Stephen Walker and Campbell Darcy came on in place of Nathan Thomas and Sam Collins.

Hutchinson also came on for his Whitby Town Debut as he replaced Charles who was starved of service all afternoon and feeding off scraps.

The breakthrough finally came through Gibson who was picked out by a glorious ball forward from the back by Whelan. The substitute calmly lobbed the Rylands 'keeper who was caught in no man's land, and Gibson saw his stupendous strike nestle in the back of the net.

Gibson’s strike would be enough as Whitby held on and made it two wins from two on the road.
