After Saturday's narrow 3-2 defeat to Macclesfield, Nathan Haslam's side went in search of a return to winning ways to end the month of August in the Pitching In Northern Premier League, but were undone by Thompson's stunner and Sweet's neat finish.
The Seasiders started well, with the always dangerous Nathan Thomas involved in the first chance of the afternoon. The former Sheffield United winger put the ball through the legs of his marker before shooting, but goalkeeper Nathan Harker wasn't to be troubled as the ball was skied over the crossbar.
There were moments of danger for Town early on - Thompson almost capitalised on an uncharacteristic mistake from Shane Bland, Michael Fowler narrowly missed the target, and Thompson again worrying Bland with a fierce strike that was tipped away from danger. Haslam's side retained a threat in the final third, with Stephen Walker being denied by an immense sliding challenge from Lewis King.
But just before the half way stage, they fell behind. It was a stunning opener for the hosts, with the ball falling loose to Thompson before his powerful, dipping effort from distance found the net via the crossbar; a finish that Bland had no chance of saving and a goal that gave the Anchors a lead at the break.
Haslam's side made a bright start to the second half and had a goal chalked off within a minute of the restart. Walker saw his relatively tame effort parried by Harker, however Thomas was flagged for offside on the rebound.
This was as good as it got for the Seasiders who put in a poor second half showing. After a let-off early in the second period where Bland made a remarkable save from Joshua Baggs, Sweet wasn't so forgiving when a through ball evaded the boot of Jassem Sukar allowing the Stockton forward to run in on goal and put the ball through the legs of the despairing Whitby 'keeper. The Seasiders will certainly have been disappointed with the manner of the goal.
The troublesome Fowler then put an effort just wide of the mark as the Anchors continued to push, with Lewis Leech forcing a save from Bland and Fowler heading just over the bar with the Whitby gloveman beaten.
Whitby looked to fight back, with substitute Aaron Haswell going close, but that was all Haslam's side really offered in an attacking sense for the remainder of the match.
In truth, the Blues barely looked like mustering a response in their second outing of the August Bank Holiday weekend - and were, in the end, somewhat fortunate not to have conceded more than the two goals they did.
