The story of the day was Shane Bland’s club record levelling appearance alongside Paul Pitman, making his 484th appearance for the Seasiders across two spells at the club. Bland could set the new appearance record next Saturday when the Seasiders travel to Warrington Rylands.
Ahead of kick off, Sergeant Andy Hinds of RAF Fylingdales laid a wreath in the centre circle to commemorate the sacrifice of those lost in the battle and conflict ahead of Remembrance Sunday. An immaculately observed minutes' silence followed the playing of The Last Post.
The game began in a cagey fashion. Thirteen minutes in and the first yellow card was produced after Guiseley’s Lucas Oduston put in a late challenge on Harley Dawson. This challenge got Whitby’s home crowd on their feet.
Five minutes later they were on their feet again; a speculative effort from Layton Watts was palmed clear of danger by Joe Cracknell in the Guiseley goal to keep the game at 0-0.
In the 27th minute, a Whitby corner almost broke the deadlock. The corner was swung in and flicked on by Jake Charles, with Alex Nelson narrowly missing at the back post.
With the first half almost up, Guiseley were awarded a free-kick on the wing. The ball was floated into the box where Will Longbottom could only head over from close range.
With the half drawing to a close, Amir Berchil seized on a loose ball in midfield and drove forwards and forced a huge save from Bland down to his left-hand side which saw the half end goalless.
Whitby made a bright start to the second half as Charles fired a ball across the goal. Moments later Guiseley’s George Goodman saw his sliced effort go wide.
In the 57th minute Guiseley began to pile on pressure with a Jack Emmett effort which curled wide. Guiseley put together a neat piece of play and opened up the home sides' defence as Player-Manager Gary Liddle slipped to concede the penalty and his side's first yellow card. Seconds later the penalty was converted by Jordan Thewlis to give his side a deserved lead.
Whitby did fight back as substitutes Jarrett Rivers and Matthew Tymon whipped in several crosses to cause Guiseley defensive problems.
It was one final roll of the dice for Whitby as Nelson was forced off with a minor injury to be replaced by Aaron Haswell.
The time was ticking for Whitby within injury time. A long ball forward saw Lawlor give away a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the box. Haswell took his run up and placed the ball perfectly in the top left corner, beyond Cracknell who had no chance of keeping that one out.
In the last minute, a Guiseley corner was played into the box but Town cleared the ball and the final whistle was blown.
