Whitby Town 1-2 Morpeth Town

Liam Ryder27 Dec 2025 - 09:21

A first-half flurry of goals condemned Whitby Town to a 2-1 defeat against Morpeth Town in the Pitching In Northern Premier League on Boxing Day.

Aaron Chungh's tap-in fired the Highwaymen into the lead in front of a bumper crowd at the Towbar Express Stadium, before Donald Chimalilo's clinical finish, when off balance, levelled the matchday 21 encounter on the half-hour mark.

Targeting a first win since a 1-0 triumph at Warrington Rylands on November 15th, Whitby were dealt a further blow as Joel Holvey netted the eventual match-winner, turning the ball home after being invited to charge forwards towards the Seasiders' defence.

One change was made from the side which claimed a 0-0 draw against Stockton Town two weeks previous, with Nathan McGinley returning from injury in place of Michael Woods who dropped to the bench.

The Seasiders began the Boxing Day clash in strong fashion as Chimalilo went agonisingly close to scoring his fifth Town goal since joining from Ashton United last summer, cutting inside onto his right foot before the Zambian's low strike was saved by Daniel Langley.

Langley produced a key stop to deny Jake Charles from giving Whitby the lead as the striker had two bites of the cherry but saw his second effort blocked by the Morpeth goalkeeper's body.

Holvey was invited to shoot for Morpeth's first chance, albeit striking off target from distance with the Whitby defence backing off him.

Harley Dawson was unable to give Whitby the lead as the 19-year-old found space to shoot inside the area with the visitors struggling to deal with a corner delivery from Layton Watts. After a number of efforts, Dawson eventually saw his attempt scrambled behind.

Morpeth took the lead in the 27th minute as Chungh netted. After Nic Bollado latched onto a forward pass, the attacker's cross was played in Chungh's path who cooly slotted into an empty net.

But Whitby found themselves on level terms within three minutes as Chimalilo equalised for the Seasiders, persistently pressuring Jeff Henderson and striking beyond the reach of Langley.

Whitby survived another goalscoring opportunity from the visitors, with Matthew Griggs shooting narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

The hosts were dealt a further blow in the 38th minute as Holvey netted Morpeth's second goal of the afternoon, with the attack-minded wing-back running at the Whitby defence and finding opportunity to shoot beyond Shane Bland.

Watts was more of an attacking threat in the second-half, his cross-shot being spilt by Langley with no one in a blue shirt able to follow-up on the rebound.

Matthew Tymon, introduced from the substitutes' bench at half-time, was unable to net his fifth of the 2025/26 campaign in all competitions after getting on the end Watts' cross and flicking it towards goal with his head, as Langley held.

Morpeth withstood further attacking pressure as Whitby broke with pace before Chimalilo's drilled effort was struck wide of Langley's post.

The Seasiders thought they had levelled for a second time in the 73rd minute as Tymon turned the ball towards goal with a downward header but the ball was somewhat miraculously turned around the post by Langley.

Seeking an equaliser, Charles was unable to net his first goal since October 25th as the experienced Northern Premier League forward collected the ball following Watts' left-wing corner but saw a back-heeled effort gathered by Langley.

James Harrison and Woods, both introduced from the bench, were unable to have any meaningful impact on the remainder of the game in the final exchanges as Town became frustrated against a resolute Morpeth side.

Despite four minutes of stoppage-time, Whitby were unable to net an all-important equaliser as their three-game winless run continued.
