There was just one change from the disappointing 3-0 defeat at Morpeth Town, with an enforced switch seeing James Harrison come in for the unavailable Lewis Hawkins. It was also a notable afternoon for Layton Watts, who captained Whitby Town for the first time.
The Seasiders could not have asked for a better start in this relegation six-pointer. Inside five minutes, Harley Dawson produced a perfectly weighted ball in behind the Hyde defence to pick out Jake Charles. Showing both strength and composure, Charles held off his marker before coolly slotting the ball beyond Li-Bau Stowell to give Whitby an early lead.
Buoyed by the goal, Whitby continued to press, and they came within inches of doubling their advantage just four minutes later. Dawson, heavily involved in the opening stages, struck for goal from a tight angle and saw his effort crash back off the upright with Hyde struggling to clear their lines.
Despite Whitby’s early dominance, Hyde began to grow into the contest. Dontai Gabidon tested Shane Bland on 18 minutes, but his effort on the turn was comfortably gathered by the Whitby goalkeeper. However, the visitors would find their equaliser shortly after. On 24 minutes, Tunde Owalabi capitalised on a close-range opportunity, tapping home to bring Hyde level.
Hyde thought they had turned the game around before the break when Owalabi found the net again on 39 minutes, but Whitby were relieved to see the offside flag raised, ensuring the sides went in level at the interval.
The second half saw Whitby look to regain control. Charles remained a threat and forced a save early on, his deflected effort held by Stowell. At the other end, Whitby’s defence stood firm, with Finlay Holcroft producing an important intervention on 58 minutes to divert the ball off Owalabi and behind for a goal kick.
Chances became more limited as the half progressed, though Whitby continued to show attacking intent. Dawson again went close on 64 minutes, his curling effort blocked well by a resilient Hyde defence. Bland was called into action shortly after, doing well to push away a low free-kick from Edy Maeico.
As the game entered its closing stages, both sides pushed for a winner. Jack Redshaw dragged a long-range effort wide on 86 minutes for Hyde, but the best opportunity came right at the death for Whitby. In the 89th minute, a frantic scramble in the Hyde box saw both James Harrison and Jason Kennedy denied in quick succession, as the visitors held on.
In the end, both sides may feel they had enough chances to claim all three points, however, a draw ensured both gained a point on the bottom three in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division following Morpeth Town's 4-0 loss at Hednesford Town.
