Whitby Town 0-0 Bamber Bridge

Liam Ryder

Whitby Town were forced to settle for a point in Graeme Lee’s first game in charge as Bamber Bridge held firm to secure a goalless draw at the Towbar Express Stadium.

In a contest short on clear-cut opportunities, the Seasiders had chances to take all three points, most notably when Stuart Rose sent a second-half penalty over the crossbar. Despite a determined effort after the break, Whitby were unable to find the breakthrough against their visitors.

The afternoon began with a delay of over an hour to kick-off after Bamber Bridge encountered traffic problems on their journey to the North Yorkshire coast. Once the action finally got underway, both sides settled into a cagey opening period, with neither able to establish a clear advantage.

Bamber Bridge were first to attempt to make things happen going forward, and Archie Lang was among the first to threaten. The midfielder tried his luck from distance in the 17th minute, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

Clear opportunities remained at a premium as the half progressed, although the hosts came close to breaking the deadlock with two promising moments before the interval.

In the 38th minute, Lucas Barnes did well to win possession back and found himself with plenty of space to attack. However, he was unable to get a shot away before Bamber Bridge recovered defensively to avert the danger.

Three minutes later, Vinnie Steels delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but the finishing touch was missing as the opportunity went begging.

The sides went into the break level, with Whitby needing to make their attacking pressure count after the restart.

The Seasiders were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead just four minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty. However, Rose was unable to capitalise, sending his spot-kick over the crossbar and allowing Bamber Bridge to escape unscathed.

Whitby continued to search for an opening, and Joey Phuthi came close in the 53rd minute. His effort towards the near post looked promising, but Bamber Bridge goalkeeper Charlie Brier was equal to it, producing a save to keep the scores level.

Lee made his first change shortly afterwards, introducing Marley Grant in place of Steels in the 55th minute as Whitby looked for a fresh spark in attack.

Lang remained a threat for the visitors and showed good intent in the 66th minute, driving forward before seeing his low strike deflected wide. It was an encouraging attacking moment for the away side.

As the contest entered its closing stages, Whitby continued to look for a way through, while Bamber Bridge remained difficult to break down. Neither side could find the decisive moment, and the referee's final whistle confirmed that the points would be shared.

Although the Seasiders will feel they had opportunities to claim victory, particularly with the missed penalty, there were positives to take from their determination and willingness to push forward, plus a rare clean sheet.

Lee’s first match in charge ultimately ended without a goal at either end, leaving Whitby to take a point from an afternoon in which the decisive breakthrough proved elusive.
