Whitby Town made the long midweek trip to the Fibrus Community Stadium and returned home with all three points after an impressive performance against Workington, scoring twice in a strong display to give new manager Lee his first win as Town boss, following up Saturday's solid 0-0 draw with Bamber Bridge.
The Seasiders showed attacking intent throughout the contest and were rewarded for their efforts with goals from Rose and Grant, before Luke Hunter struck late on for the hosts to make it a somewhat more uncomfortable end to the evening for Whitby.
Whitby began positively, looking to create opportunities and put the hosts under pressure. Grant came close after Callum Hickman intercepted possession in midfield and threaded a pass into his path. Grant cut inside onto his right foot, but his curling effort drifted over the crossbar.
Workington threatened at the other end, with Dan Hopper finding space inside the area before striking straight at Oliver Swan. The Whitby goalkeeper was also called upon to deal with a powerful effort from distance as both sides looked to establish control.
The visitors continued to create chances as the half progressed. Hickman found himself through on goal in the 24th minute, but his side-footed effort was comfortably gathered by Danny Eccles.
Rose also tested the Workington goalkeeper following some neat attacking play, while Daniel James came close to breaking the deadlock with a powerful strike from a tight angle in the 41st minute. Eccles was equal to the challenge, keeping the scores level.
However, Whitby’s persistence finally paid off right on the stroke of half-time.
Stan Hewitt drove forward impressively before finding Hickman, who moved the ball out wide to James. The winger delivered an inviting cross into the area, where Rose leapt to meet it and guided his header beyond Eccles to give the Seasiders a crucial lead.
Whitby returned for the second half with confidence and looked to build on their advantage.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 57th minute through Grant, who showed excellent composure to make it 2-0. Having been denied from point-blank range moments earlier, Grant reacted quickest when a Workington mistake presented him with another opportunity. He capitalised calmly inside the area to put Whitby firmly in control.
Jack Dickinson then tried his luck from distance for the hosts, sending a snapshot over the crossbar before forcing Swan into a good save with a low, driven effort.
Hewitt came close to adding a Whitby third in the 76th minute, curling a free-kick from the edge of the area into the side netting.
However, Workington created a nervy ending with Hunter providing a moment of quality by delicately lifting the ball over the onrushing Oliver Swan to score.
The final stages saw the Seasiders work hard to see out the contest and protect their advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a valuable away victory and a landmark result for Lee, whose first win as Whitby Town manager will provide encouragement for the games ahead.
With attacking contributions from Rose and Grant, alongside a determined team performance, Whitby can take plenty of positives from their trip to Workington as they look to build momentum under their new manager.
