Whitby Town 1-0 Curzon Ashton

Whitby Town made it back-to-back victories with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Curzon Ashton, as Callum Hickman’s first-half strike proved enough to secure all three points for the Seasiders.

In a competitive encounter, Whitby showed determination and defensive resilience to protect their advantage after taking the lead shortly before half-time, with goalkeeper Oliver Swan making important contributions as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

The Seasiders made a positive start and looked to create opportunities going forward. On nine minutes, Callum Hickman produced some neat footwork to flick the ball over his opponent before playing a low pass into the path of Marley Grant, who was unable to make contact before Curzon cleared the danger.

Whitby continued to apply pressure and came close to breaking the deadlock midway through the first half. Lucas Barnes delivered a free-kick into the area, where Sam Kay rose to meet it with a header, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Curzon goalkeeper Aiden Dowling on 33 minutes.

Hickman then tested Dowling again four minutes later, this time with a low strike that the goalkeeper held well.

However, Whitby would not have to wait much longer to find the breakthrough.

With 42 minutes played, Hickman tried his luck from distance and was rewarded for his effort. His strike proved too difficult for Dowling to keep out, sending the home side into the break with a valuable 1-0 lead.

Curzon looked to respond after the interval, but Whitby remained organised and continued to threaten at the other end.

The visitors came agonisingly close to levelling the score on 66 minutes when Alex Curran struck the post. The rebound fell kindly for Bradley Holmes, but his follow-up effort flew over the crossbar.

As the game entered its closing stages, the visitors increased their efforts to find a leveller, forcing Swan into action. The Whitby goalkeeper did well to keep out a chipped attempt on 81 minutes, ensuring his side maintained their slender advantage.

Curzon threatened again five minutes later when a powerful strike flew narrowly wide of Swan’s right-hand post.

Whitby were not without opportunities of their own. Marley Grant sent a ball across the face of goal on 76 minutes, finding Vinnie Steels at the back post, but his header went straight into Dowling’s hands.

Steels came even closer two minutes from time when the ball dropped invitingly inside the area, only for Dowling to produce a strong save to deny him and keep Curzon in contention.

Despite late pressure with balls flung into the box regularly, Whitby held firm to see out the contest and claim another important victory.

Hickman’s first-half goal ultimately proved decisive, while the team’s resilience at the back ensured the Seasiders could celebrate another three points following their midweek triumph at Workington.

The result makes it consecutive wins for Whitby Town, providing further momentum as they look to build on their recent performances ahead of their next outing at FC United of Manchester on Saturday 24th October (3pm kick-off.) Click here to book match travel.
