Lee in good spirits despite home draw

Liam Ryder20 Aug 2021 - 19:45

Despite being unable to find a crucial winning goal, Whitby Town joint-manager Lee Bullock was in good spirits following their goalless draw with Radcliffe

This was argubaly the better of the two performances in the Blues' season to this point, with them not being at their best in their opening day win at Lancaster City.

With that in mind, Bullock did admit that he was somewhat frustrated that his side couldn't take all three points but he was pleased with what he saw.

"I really enjoyed watching us in the second half," said Bullock.

"We told the lads to up their game in the second half as we felt that doing that would allow us to win the game, or get a 0-0 which is how it turned out. We created some really good chances and we were constantly on the front foot.

"I'm disappointed that we couldn't get a winner, but I did really enjoy what I saw."

The first half wasn't particulary filled with chances galore, but Lewis Hawkins went close for Whitby after 13 minutes but his first-time effort was comforable for Samuel Ashton to gather.

Six minutes later, Matthew Crothers called Shane Bland into action, but once again his effort was routine for the goalkeeper to save.

With 24 minutes played, Robert Grant forced Nathan Dyer into making a good block after his long-range strike, before, at the other end, a wicked ball into the box from Josh MacDonald just evaded Jacob Hazel for Town.

Right-back Dyer went close to opening the scoring after 37 minutes when he struck a powerful effort from range which Ashton was only able to parry. Unfortunately for the Seasiders, no one was there to follow up on the rebound.

MacDonald caused more problems just before the break, once again breaking into the area before picking out Marcus Giles, but he scuffed his effort.

As Bullock and Nathan Haslam had asked for, the second half was bright and filled with Whitby chances, and the second 45 minutes started well with Lewis Ritson being first to test Ashton as he curled one towards goal from outside the penalty area.

Hawkins then broke into the box with 58 minutes gone, but his low effort was tipped wide by Ashton. It was a difficult effort for the Radcliffe shot-stopper to save with the strike coming through a crowd of defenders.

Following a corner on 61 minutes, captain Daniel Rowe received the ball in the area but he fired into the side-netting from a tight angle, before Whitby keeper Bland was called into action two minutes later, palming away an effort from ex-Football League striker Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro.

On 71 minutes, Radcliffe thought they had taken the lead against the run of play when Kole Hall fired home, but he was to be denied by Matthew Carroll's offside flag.

The best chance of the game came to Liam Cooke on 79 minutes after Jacob Hazel picked out an excellent pass to find him. Cooke rounded Ashton but took the ball too far wide which allowed Radcliffe defenders to get back and eventually clear.

Priestley Griffiths had a go from range on 83 minutes, and Hazel went close to a late winner in stoppage time when he curled an effort towards the top corner, but it was just wide of the post.

Despite the dominant second half, Whitby were unable to find a winner, however they will be pleased with their start to the season having picked up four points and kept clean sheets in both games. They sit sixth in the table after the first two games of the season.
