Whitby Town came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Basford United at Greenwich Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts had the better of the first half, breaking the deadlock through Kane Richards' strike.

The Seasiders, however, got back on level terms with 13 minutes of normal time to play though Harry Green's bullet header but they were unable to snatch the win.

Nathan Haslam, who was managing solo with Lee Bullock absent after a positive Covid-19 test, made one change to the side that claimed a 5-0 victory over Mossley in the Buildbase FA Trophy the previous week, as Soni Fergus replaced the injured Priestley Griffiths.

Basford almost broke the deadlock in the 11th minute of the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division encounter as Matt Thornhill fired wide from inside the area.

In the 13th minute, Basford struck the crossbar through Ryan Wilson who saw his curling free-kick worry Shane Bland in the Whitby goal.

Bland was called into action seven minutes later, however, as Aaron O'Connor tried to fire an effort towards goal. After receiving the ball on the right-hand side of the Whitby box, he tried to shoot across Bland who gathered comfortably.

The Nottinghamshire outfit then took the lead when Whitby failed to clear the ball away from danger and Richards was on hand to scuff the ball into the back of the net from just inside the area.

The first half somewhat petered out with Whitby failing to threaten Adam Collin in the United goal.

In the second-half, Town looked much more menacing on the front foot and they went close to levelling matters in the 66th minute when Jacob Hazel prodded just wide from a tight angle.

In the 77th minute, Whitby did get their leveller as Green headed home from Jacob Hazel's cross following some sustained pressure from the Blues.

In the 85th minute, Whitby could have been in front were it not for the hands of Collin who palmed Marcus Giles' strike away from danger.

The Seasiders continued their push for a late winner as Josh MacDonalds struck just over the crossbar from range, before Green was denied by Collin in stoppage time.
