Blues boosted by FA Cup win

Whitby Town made it through to the Second Qualifying Round of the Emirates Cup in some style, with a 4-0 win over Warrington Rylands at Gorsey Lane

Rylands knocked the Blues out of the competition on penalties at the exact same stage last season, but there was to be no repeat on this occasion with Lee Bullock and Nathan Haslam's side running out convincing winners in the North-West.

A second half flourish saw the Seasiders play some attractive football and score some great goals, much to the delight of the strong travelling support who made the trip from Whitby.

It was the home side who had the first chance of note, but Adam Buxton fired well wide from long-range, before Jacob Hazel hit the side netting from around 20 yards out with six minutes on the clock.

Joseph Coveney attempted to drill a free-kick towards Shane Bland's goal on eight minutes but it was over the bar, and then at the other end Hazel got his head to a dangerous Jassem Sukar ball from the left-hand side but it glanced off the striker and went behind for a goal kick.

Next to have a go was Liam Cooke for Town, but after beating two defenders with some neat footwork, he eventually dragged an effort wide.

Left-back Sukar almost scored the opener on 23 minutes only to be denied by home goalkeeper Graeme McCall who did well to react to Sukar's fizzing effort from range.

Whitby were starting to have a good spell of pressure and Josh MacDonald was unlucky not to give his side the lead when he broke into the area and had two attempts at goal before Rylands eventually cleared.

Cooke was involved again in the 29th minute, this time seeing McCall react well once more to tip his deflected effort behind for a corner ball which came to nothing.

The home side did continue to pose some form of threat and Bland was forced to make a save, albeit a comfortable one, when Stephen Milne broke forwards. He could only hit a tame effort when under pressure from Sukar.

With half-time looming, Whitby had a string of corners and two of them caused serious danger for the Rylands defence. Firstly, Marcus Giles' low ball into the box following a short corner caused havoc, before he had the same effect on the stroke of the break when McCall eventually gathered his ball only to get into a tustle with Town forward Hazel. Some unsavory scenes followed but both sides remained with eleven men going into the second half.

The second 45 minutes did start with a bang for the Seasiders though as MacDonald made a darting run into the opposition's penalty area before eventually seeing his run halted via a foul which resulted in a penalty for Town.

It was 19-year-old Giles who stepped up to take it and he buried it like he had made a full career out of scoring from 12 yards as he calmly dinked the ball down the middle, beyond the despairing McCall who had already made a move to his right.

On 51 minutes, Richard Smith tried to get the hosts level almost immediately but he could only head over from a free-kick before a real moment of FA Cup magic extended Whitby's lead a minute later.

A ball into the area from the Whitby left looped up into the air and with his back to goal, Hazel acrobatically fired home with a superb overhead kick - quite ironic given that Wayne Rooney's agent is an investor at Warrington Rylands.

Having gone two goals behind, Dave McNabb's team had to go all-out to try and get level an force an improbble replay at the Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull Ground.

This also opened up more gaps for Whitby to try and exploit and Hazel went close to his second, only to be denied by a good block having broken into the 18 yard box.

MacDonald was next to force some more last-ditch defending on 66 minutes, and it would have been 3-0 were it not for some heroic defending on the goal-line.

The Hartlepool United loanee would get his goal with six minutes of normal time to play though when Hazel made another powerful run into the area before finding MacDonald who had time to turn before firing beyond McCall.

The home side would then be reduced to ten men two minutes later when Coveney was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Sukar. The midfiedler could have no complaints.

Four minutes of stoppage time were added and this was still enough time for Whitby to muster another two chances, one of which resulted in their fourth goal.
