Whitby Town secured their progress to the First Round Proper of the Buildbase FA Trophy as the Seasiders ran out 1-0 winners against Shildon at Dean Street on Saturday afternoon.

After some mis-communication resulted in the Blues having to wear Shildon's away kit, Whitby put in a professional performance against their County Durham opponents who played the majority of the game with ten men after Chay Liddle's dismissal.

Jacob Hazel's goal as the Seasiders returned to winning ways after losing to Stafford Rangers in the league the previous week.

Lee Bullock and Nathan Haslam made two changes to the team that lost to Stafford, bringing in Jameel Ible and Adam Gell for Jonathan Burn and Jake Hackett.

The visitors had their first glimpse of goal early on when Marcus Giles was played through on goal, but he could only shoot straight at Shaun Newbrook.

Josh MacDonald, who looked lively down the right-wing, then played a dangerous ball across the face of goal but there was no one there to fire home.

Shildon went a man down in the 27th minute when Liddle was shown a straight red card after a challenge on Priestley Griffiths which saw the Whitby midfielder's afternoon also come to a premature end due to injury.

Whitby went close to breaking the deadlock in the 39th minute but Hazel was flagged offside.

With the half-time whistle approaching, Town created a chance and took it when Hazel latched on to Liam Cooke's through ball to fire home beyond Newbrook who had no chance.

In the second-half, the game became a little more feighsty with Marcus Giles receiving a yellow card after a late challenge on Aidan Heywood.

However, as things calmed down, Hazel could have had his second of the afternoon but after breaking into the area, he was denied by Newbrook who saved well low down to his right.

In the 73rd minute, Town had a half-chance as Nathan Dyer went for goal from range. His strike was blocked behind for a corner which then had to be cleared off the line after Daniel Rowe's header back across goal.

Whitby were relatively untroubled throughout the game and saw the match out comfortably.
